25: Lies Pile Up

Tuesday 4:00 a.m.

I’m alone again.

In the interrogation room.

I hate it. Hate its drab walls, the fan blowing on my neck, the mirror and stupid camera. Hate the table, the chair I’m sitting on, even the blanket that offers no comfort.

The only thing, or reason, stopping me from storming out is that Donny is a few doors down.

Mom is at my place, hopefully resting. I hate that she came, saw me like this, that she feels helpless.

I’m full of hate right now.

I’m tired. Exhausted. Grumpy. Afraid?

I need sleep or coffee. Preferably sleep, but unless Spikes comes back and tells me to leave, I won’t be getting that for a long time.

No one has come in for almost an hour. Maybe longer. Maybe shorter.

I rest my head in my crossed arms and close my eyes, hoping for a few minutes where I can maybe feel a slight relief.

There’s a knock on the door.

For the love of . . . I lift my head and hope whomever walks in feels castrated.

“Sorry, was it nap time?”

Kaarns closes the door behind her and sits in Spikes’ seat. She’s got a smug look on her face. One that says she doesn’t care despite saying sorry.

“Daddy let the young one come play? Is that how this is going to work?” Snide, sarcastic, completely insensitive but at this point, I don’t care.

Her perfectly filled brows rise as she looks at me. No words. No mud-slinging comment back, taking the high road while silently sneering on the inside.

Bitch.

“I can’t help but notice your ring,” she says, her back straight, her voice almost sympathetic.

I immediately take notice.

“What about it?” The bright florescent lights in the room have the diamonds sparkling, the only reason why a smile tugs at my lips. I can’t help but look at the empty space where I’d lost one of the smaller diamonds. Hopefully Donny insured it.

“Have you ever had it appraised?” Her voice is direct, like her gaze, which makes me a little uncomfortable.

“Why would I?”

She shrugs. “If I got a ring that size, I’d be interested in the value.” She says this in a matter of fact way, like two friends chatting over wine.

Friends, we are not.

“That doesn’t matter,” I say. In the life I used to live, there were diamonds aplenty. This ring . . . it wasn’t fake, Donny wouldn’t do that to me.

“I’ve been trying to figure you out,” Kaarns says.

“Why don’t you just ask me what you want to know?”

Her head dips in a nod.

“You don’t seem the gullible type,” she begins. “Going through your file, reading your background, I don’t understand how you could fall for a guy like Dixon.” She holds up her hand before I can comment. “What do you see in him we don’t? You know his reputation, right? Sleazy, will do anything for a buck, untrustworthy—”

“And yet,” I interrupt, “he’s the first person everyone in this town goes to when they need help.”

She nods again, but I’m not sure if she’s agreeing or just placating me.
